Languages

In year 1 and 2 we begin to learn typical French songs such as Alouette and Savez vous planter les choux?

In year 3 and 4 the children continue to learn French. We learn words and phrases we can use on a holiday to a French speaking country, for example how to order an ice cream and a drink!

In year 5 and 6 we broaden our language learning to include Spanish and German as well as continuing our French. We also learn about cultural events in different countries such as la Tomatina in Spain and la Fête de musique in France.

When children leave Fairfield, they will have a knowledge of international children’s songs, will have learnt cultural information about three countries and be able to greet people, order food and drinks and ask for directions in three langauges.

We celebrate the World of Languages every year when everyone at school dresses in an international costume and has the opportunity to learn words and phrases in world languages including Russian, Hindi and Japanese. We enjoy Croissant Day in the summer term when all children are invited to ‘la Boulangerie Fairfield’ to enjoy French pastries.

We have a Spanish club for year 3 to 6. We also have a ‘whacky language club’ for years 3 to 6, where we learn languages including Russian, Japanese, Vietnamese and Greek.
