English is not only the basic language of communication in our society but is also the foundation for almost all the learning which takes place in our school. Its mastery empowers the learner and is essential for independent study, the world of work and most other aspects of everyday life.
Our aims in teaching English are that all children will:
- Develop the necessary skills to use the English language confidently, appropriately and accurately to the best of their ability.
- Be able to speak clearly, fluently and cogently.
- Be able to listen to the spoken word attentively with understanding, pleasure and empathy and respond appropriately.
- Be able to read a range of materials fluently and with understanding for enjoyment and for information.
- Be able to write effectively and legibly for a range of audiences and purposes using spelling, punctuation and syntax accurately and confidently.
- Be in the best possible position to enable them to pass Entrance Examinations for our own Upper Schools or any other secondary school for which they chose to apply.
Within our own curriculum we aim to include and cover all aspects of the National Curriculum.
