Art is everywhere at Fairfield!
A walk around the school and classrooms will show lots of evidence of the creativity of Fairfield pupils.
Art and Design offers opportunities to stimulate children's creativity and imagination by providing visual, tactile, and sensory experiences, which in turn aids their responses and understanding to the world.
It enables children to communicate their thoughts and feelings through the use of Line, Colour, Form, Pattern, Texture
and by the application of different materials, media and processes.
The appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts encircles and enriches all our lives. We aim to foster an enquiring mind about images and artefacts through involvement in a range of practical experiments in a variety of genres, styles and traditions.
We provide lots of opportunities for children to see and examine real artefacts and artworks.
Children become involved in shaping their environment through art and design activities. They learn how to make thoughtful judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions. They can explain the impact artists, crafts people and designers have had on contemporary life and in other times and cultures.
Fairfield has many links to local artists and crafts people and where possible we like them to come into school and work with the children.
Each year group covers a range of skills and techniques including drawing, painting, printings, collage, textiles, sculpture and ICT.
Starting in the Foundation Stage, through an exciting and hands on approach, the Reception children explore colour, texture, shape, form and space in 2 and 3 dimensions.
In Key Stage 1 the Year1 and 2 children build their previous experiences and gain further skills by working on projects that made links to the world around us. These introduce concepts and techniques and allow the children to experiment and try out ideas before making an individual response to the stimulus. They start to be able to express opinions and evaluate their own and others work.
In Key Stage 2 each year group works on three projects further developing their skills, knowledge and understanding. They gain confidence in their ability to make informed choices and to adapt and refine their work as it progresses.
As well as completing projects from the art curriculum children throughout the school are using their art skills to express ideas and feelings in other curricular areas, for example Year 3 work on shape and tessellation; in Year 1 to enhance their imaginative writing; in PSHE to express emotion; in History pictures are an important visual way of showing their understanding of how people used to live in the past.
Other Opportunities
Children at Fairfield have other opportunities to be involved in art activities through after school art clubs and holiday courses.
Year 6 Art Week
On the last art week the theme was ‘Movement and People in Action’ and continued the work they had started in their art lessons looking at the human figure in action. The children used inspiration from activities they enjoyed themselves to produce a 3D figure in wire and Modroc.
They worked in small groups to draw out and paint life sized figures on 18mm exterior plywood. 24 were produced in total including skateboarding, cricket, running, climbing, diving, netball, rugby, football, hurdles, dancer and musicians. These have been cut out by the carpenters and will enliven the junior playground.
They also produced prints from lino cuts showing movement and designed and made a moving vehicle with an electric motor. The results of their busy week made a stunning on display for their parents and the rest of the school on the last afternoon. |
